How Well is your Email and Endpoint Security Performing?

With more and more employees working remotely, email is a fundamental tool for teams to communicate and remains the largest method of communication in the business world. The shift in the way we work has led to an increase in our reliance upon emails and as such organisations should ensure they have a robust email security strategy.

As cyber attacks become more sophisticated, more prevalent and harder to detect, it’s imperative that your organisation protects itself and identifies vulnerabilities in your security strategy. Currently, around 94% of breaches begin with a phishing email and 90% of the malware delivered through this method are only used once, making these attacks hard to detect for many security solutions.

For over 30 years, Trend Micro’s unwavering vision has been to make the world safe for exchanging digital information. Trend Micro develops enterprise security software for servers, containers and cloud computing environments, networks and endpoints to overcome changing IT landscapes, riskier user behaviour and constantly evolving threats.

MTI partner, Trend Micro’s Microsoft Office 365 Assessment service enables organisations to see if they are effectively protected against the many advanced threats that are impacting organisations presently and identifies any threats that may have bypassed their current security software.

With the Trend Micro assessment, you can see a detailed view of any email and endpoint threats that are found across segments of your organisation.

How the security assessment works

When you register for a security assessment, you will have the choice of two assessment plans:

  1. Office 365 Mailboxes and Potentially Compromised Endpoints – Scan all messages sent and received in the last 7 to 30 days for all Office 365 users in your environment.
  2. Potentially Compromised Endpoints Only – Identify which endpoints could potentially have been compromised.

Email assessment

Once you have granted permission for the assessment service to access your organisation’s mailboxes for scanning. The service will scan all messages sent and received in the 7 to 30 days for all Office 365 users in your environment.

Depending on the complexity of your environment, the scanning process can take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days. The scanning process takes place without any input or actions needed from you and will not affect the performance of your email service.

When the scanning process is complete, a detailed report of the findings will be available through the Assessment Service portal. Here you will be able to review the total number of scanned email messages and detection counts for several threat categories, including:

  • Phishing
  • Ransomware
  • BEC messages
  • Spam messages
  • Malicious files and URLs

The assessment report also provides a potential cost for the identified detections, so you can see how harmful they may be to your organisations.

Users within your environment are listed by their relative risk level which reflects their exposure to five threat categories in relation to other users. This helps you quickly and easily review the top possible affected users. The report also shows the top email recipients for major threat categories.

Endpoint assessment

Once you have downloaded the endpoint assessment tool and run it on all high-profile endpoints, this enables to tool to collect system information and malware samples. The tool then automatically uploads the data to the assessment service portal for in-depth analysis.

The summary of the assessment will show the total number of endpoints scanned and detection counts for malicious and suspicious threats. You can also review the results for each scanned endpoint and the top 10 detections per threat category

Gaining a snapshot of your security posture and understanding where your email and endpoint vulnerabilities are can help inform your security strategy and ensure your organisation’s security is robust.

Next Steps

Gaining a clearer understanding of how well your email and endpoint security is performing can help ensure that your organisation is protected from being compromised. Our Trend Micro assessment is able to analyse Microsoft® Office 365®, as well as several other file-sharing services, such as Dropbox™, Box™, Microsoft® OneDrive® and Google Drive™ online storage service.

With direct cloud-to-cloud integration, using Microsoft application programming interfaces (API), we can provide a full report that informs you of vulnerabilities so you can better protect your organisation against malicious attacks and identify threats that may have bypassed your security software.
